2012 Weddings - A Year in Review

2012 was an absolutely incredible year. I was privileged to photograph 21 weddings all over the country, from Los Angeles to Washington D.C., from Santa Barbara to Michigan and Connecticut. I am so incredibly humbled and honored to have been given the opportunity to photograph these amazing events for my clients. I look forward to sharing more images from each of these weddings in the coming months, as well as from the incredible events of 2013.

I am so excited that Emily and Matt's wedding is now ALSO being featured in Destination Weddings and Honeymoons Magazine as part of their Newport, Rhode Island section of the hottest spots to get married! I must say that I totally agree that Newport is one of the most fantastic locations for a wedding, especially OceanCliff Resort...I think I need to go back there and soon!

Santa Monica Pier Engagement Session

I seem to be a regular at the beaches up and down the coast of late...I mentioned in an earlier post how I just loved doing an engagement shoot in Manhattan Beach recently, and for this shoot I moved north to Santa Monica and the pier just before sunset on a cool and cloudy fall day. Nicole and Scott were not daunted by the weather - and were even more than willing to go dangerously close to the VERY cold Pacific ocean so I could capture the beautiful lights of the Santa Monica Pier against the cloudy sky. I love how weather can affect not only the look of the photos but also the energy of the entire shoot - it set the tone for intimate, quiet images and allowed me to spend a really lovely evening getting to know this wonderful couple.

Manhattan Beach Engagement Session - Courtney and Jeff

I love shooting in Manhattan Beach, what photographer doesn't love the pier with that perfect light underneath? What was especially fun about my session with Courtney and Jeff, though, was that we decided to stray away from the surf and sand and stroll around the Manhattan Beach's town to find fun places to shoot along the way. We had a ball with everything from bicycles to cotton candy to murals as our background. Plus, Courtney and Jeff are just such a beautiful, fun couple and so full of life - which you really can see from the images. I can't wait for the wedding this summer at the Bel-Air Bay Club!

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

frustrated because you don't really know how to take advantage of all of its
features? Do you just want to learn a few simple techniques to take amazing
pictures of your kids? Want to shoot in a mode other than Auto?

This four-hour basics session will drastically improve the relationship you have with your camera - not to mention the photos you take with it. You will learn how to capture amazing moments of your kids in a variety of situations. We will also touch on techniques for photographing landscapes, florals and other subjects. You will leave the class with a whole new understanding about how to use your camera!

1. Fundamentals: How to use your camera and take advantage of aperture, shutter speed and ISO speed adjustments to get those really amazing shots.

2. Go toward the light! After all, it is all about lighting, so we will learn
simple tricks to find magical light that differentiates an artistic photograph
from a snapshot.

3. Finding your Artistic Eye: We talk at great length about composition and finding your own personal style and using the camera to not just take a picture, but rather tell a story and capture both beautiful images and emotional content.

4. Tips and Tricks: Learn to apply all of the above to your real life photo situations: how to get the best shots at ballet recitals, basketball games, indoor and outdoor sports, group shots at large family gatherings and whatever else you can come up with!

Bel-Air Bay Club Wedding - Meredith and Cody

There are two things that I absolutely love when photographing a wedding...working with the extremely talented Dana Abrams of Haber Event Group, and working at the magical Bel-Air Bay Club in Pacific Palisades. And when you add an amazing couple, like Meredith and Cody, well, it's just a perfect day at the beach. I already knew that photographing these two would be dreamy - you may remember them from our foggy beach engagement shoot here. The wedding day was just as fun and fabulous and luckily for us, bright blue skies and sunny!

Anna and Aarish - Western and Indian Wedding

I was so thrilled to travel to the Washington D.C. area for this wonderful Western/Indian Wedding Weekend this past year. Not only are Anna and Aarish just the nicest couple, but they were referred to me by Emily and Matt, whose wedding I photographed in 2011 in Newport, Rhode Island, so I got to see them as well! They created a ceremony that reflected both of their cultures, merging both Indian and Western traditions in the most meaningful way.

It wasn't really a destination wedding weekend for them, as they all live and work in D.C., but it was for me, and being a Connecticut girl, I was just loving the East Coast landscape of the rolling hills and trees surrounding the ceremony spot in Anna's parents' backyard. But with the East Coast landscape comes the East Coast weather and just as we were finishing the ceremony and grabbed a handful of photos, the skies opened up and it absolutely poured for about 30 minutes. But as is often the case, the rain stopped and we were able to climb a nearby hill and make the most of the gorgeous and dramatic skies. And the weather certainly didn't put a damper on the spirits of the family and friends at the party!

So you might recognize this hot couple from the engagement shoot we did in Hollywood a few months back, right in the middle of Hollywood and Highland. After that shoot I just knew that the wedding would be fabulous and it absolutely exceeded my expectations.

First of all, I simply adore this family. I had the pleasure of photographing Orli's brother, Josh's wedding a few years back and just love the passion, humor and love of life that everyone in this family shares. From the beautiful ketubah signing to the touching ceremony and non-stop party, this wedding was one that I just didn't want to end!

In a Fog

I think one of the most important things a photographer can do to capture stunning, emotional images at weddings is to take time to photograph, well, not weddings. I was talking with a few other wedding photographers recently and we all agreed that we all benefit from capturing other moments, from shooting people, places and events that inform our vision of the world at large, and that help us bring our own unique creativity to capturing the wedding day.

Living in California, but having grown up on the East Coast, I am always a little thrilled by the morning fog that rolls in off the Pacific in June. "June Gloom" doesn't really exist where I grew up, and every time I have the opportunity to photograph a bit of it, I feel re-energized as an artist.

From LA to Pismo Beach to San Francisco, I just love me those foggy mornings...especially when it burns off by afternoon, just in time for a wedding!

And then, of course, there are those delicious moments when I get a little bit of both!

Bel-Air Bay Club Wedding - Haeran and David

To give you an idea of how much fun it was to work with Haeran and David, I have to point out that just four days before the wedding, Haeran twisted her ankle so badly that she would have to wear a boot on her wedding day. With her Vera Wang dress and instead of her amazing Louboutin shoes. But instead of letting it get her down, she donned a boot that her wonderfully clever friends spray painted red...on the bottom. Boot a la Louboutin.

Not only did she not let it get her down, or in any way have it be a source of stress on her wedding day, she embraced it and found the humor in it and was just glowing, boot and all.

I found Haeran and David to be such an inspiration - they chose to enjoy every minute of their day - Haeran hobbled down the aisle and danced the night away without a second thought to her unusual footwear.

It is so easy to get stressed out about the details of a wedding, everyone wants it to be just perfect. But the key to a perfect wedding has little to do with having every detail in place, but rather to having a fantastic attitude and relishing the day every "hobbly" step of the way.
